Year 2

The list of modules and breakdown are correct when it was written, things may be different now! Feel free to update me of any changes at nusmecheng@gmail.com so that others may enjoy the updated information! Cheers.

SEMESTER 3

SUMMARY

Big change from Year 1, a sudden jump in difficulty. ALL MODULES WERE WEBCASTED THIS SEM, which was of great help (not for skipping lectures) when you do not understand what is going on and need to re-watch a particular lecture topic. Workload wise, relatively light as there are no project for the 5 core modules and they are mostly 70-80% exam. There is lab once a week almost every week, but they are very manageable. NUS advises to take a sixth module (refer to course overview page), which is mostly not an issue (workload wise) till exams, where there may be a content and exam overload. Advised to start studying for exams really early due to the sheer amount of content there is (especially if u fell behind due to minimal continual assessment).

Module: ME2113 – Mechanics of Materials I

Webcast: Yes

Grading: 10% Labs (5% x 2)

10% Midterm Quiz

80% Exam (closed book)

Abstract: Content and workload wise, a relatively light module but do not neglect this module until exams (considering how hard the other modules are). Midterm quiz is down online at your own time, get together with some friends and do it together. Questions are random and taken from a question bank, some are easy while others are deceivingly tricky!

Module: ME2121 – Engineering Thermodynamics

Webcast: Yes

Grading: 20% Labs (10% x 2)

10% Midterm Quiz

70% Exam (closed book)

Abstract: Known for its difficulty, thermo requires deep understanding of concepts in order to do well. Very interesting module, lots of cycles, diagrams and many many equations. The textbook by Cengel is very good, and actually entertaining to read. Highly recommended.

Module: ME2134 – Fluid Mechanics I

Webcast: Yes

Grading: 20% Labs (10% x 2)

80% Exam (Closed book, 2x A4 double sided cheat sheet)

Abstract: Thank god for the cheat sheet, all the formulas and concepts go in. Very interesting module, first part is very straightforward with standard calculations and equations, second part is more abstract but with a standard method to answer. Exam is pretty straightforward and your cheat sheet will get you through many questions.

Module: ME2151 – Principles of Mechanical Engineering Materials

Webcast: Yes

Grading: 20% Labs (10% x 2)

80% Exam (Closed book)

Abstract: A very non-engineering type of module, mostly based on theory with minimal to virtually no calculations. More of a material science and chemistry module. Although each concept is simply explained and seems straightforward, a deep understanding and cross-linking between concepts is the key to success for this module. Memorisation will not get you a good grade in this module.

Module: ME3162 – Manufacturing Processes

Webcast: Yes

Grading: 20% Labs (10% x 2)

80% Exam (Open book)

Abstract: Very entertaining lectures, easy on content. Prof is very engaging and HILARIOUS, and half of each lecture is spent watching videos. Very cool module as you can relate everything that is taught around you in all manufactured plastic and metal objects. All notes and content for part 1 is perfectly summarised in point form into a book made by the prof. Although open book, it pays to attend lectures and watch the videos, as many were shocked by their final grade.

SEMESTER 4

Module: ME2101 – Fundamentals of Mechanical Design

Webcast: Yes

Grading: 25% Group Design Project

75% Quiz (Open book)

Abstract: The quiz for this module is simply the exam, just that it is before exam week. Project can be quite heavy in terms of workload, and requires lots of CAD-ing.

Module: ME2114 – Mechanics of Materials II

Webcast: Yes

Grading: 20% Lab (10% x 2)

80% Exam (Closed book)

Abstract:

Module: ME2135 – Fluid Mechanics II

Webcast: Yes

Grading: 10% Labs (5% x 2)

20% Quiz (10% x 2)(Online, 15 questions)

70% Exam (Closed book, 2x A4 double sided cheat sheet)

Abstract:

Module: ME2143 – Sensors and Actuators

Webcast: NO

Grading: 20% Labs (10% x 2)

80% Exam (Closed book, 1x A4 double sided cheat sheet)

Abstract:

Module: ME3112 – Mechanics of Machines

Webcast: Yes

Grading: 30% Lab (15% x 2)

70% Exam (Open book)
